VIDEO: Debutantes Keep Box-Office High & Dry

2016 kept up its promise of introducing some stunning fresh faces in Bollywood. But alas! Their introduction has already been forgotten by the audience. Indian audience simply ignored them  and their films failed to set the cash registers ringing.

To start with, Pooja Hegde's Bollywood career was launched with Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Mohenjo Daro, but the film met a disastrous result at the box-office; it was a big blow for Pooja, who must have been dreaming of a glorious recognition and acceptance at the silver screen.

Gautam Gulati was not a fresh face to begin with, he was the Big Boss 8 winner and also a part of a couple of tele-series, but still viewers were not very excited about his film debut. His portrayal of a veteran cricketer didn’t go well with the audience.

Every actress dreams to be a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s film and of course it was a dream-come-true moment for Shriya Pilgaonkar and Waluscha De Sousa, who were a part of SRK’s Fan. But unfortunately for them, the film’s performance at the box-office was mediocre and the debut of both the girls got diluted.

Anil Kapoor, even at this age, is a darling of movie buffs. But the same couldn’t be said about his son Harshvardhan Kapoor. Harshvardhan and Saiyami Kher made their debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya. Unquestionably, the film is shot poetically but the audience refused to spend their hard-earned money on Harsh and Saiyami. Don’t worry Harsh, even your sister had started out with a box-office failure (Saawariya) but is now doing very well for herself.

And last but not the least, Ritika Singh couldn’t be happier when her Bollywood debut Saala Khadoos found a producer in top notch director Rajkumar Hirani. While the film and her performance were appreciated, the box-office was cold and the film was declared a flop.

Some more debutantes are ready to show their talent towards the end of the year with Dangal and let’s see how the box-office reacts to them.

Experts agree that showbiz is an uncertain industry and there is no concrete formula to gain mass adulation. However, history suggests many successful actors of today had started with a flop but went ahead and changed the perspective of the audience. Be it the mega Star Amitabh Bachchan or Ranbir Kapoor.

Debutantes, please do not be disheartened and keep up the hard work.
